About the Executive Director Position
The Historic Virginia Land Conservancy (HVLC) was founded in 1990 and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to protect natural, scenic, agricultural, and historic land throughout our region. HVLC currently protects nearly 7,000 acres of land and has a significant number of properties that are being evaluated for potential easements and donation. HVLC has been accredited since 2015 by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance. The annual budget is just over $200,000, funded primarily by members’ contributions, donations from easement grantors, and fundraising events. The staff consists of the Executive Director, a Land Stewardship and Operations Manager, and an Administrative Assistant. The Executive Director is expected to work a flexible 32 hours per week with 26 days of paid time off including vacation, sick days, and holidays.
The Executive Director reports directly to the actively engaged 16-member Board and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization, including staff oversight, championing the Conservancy’s strategic plan, developing and implementing a successful fundraising plan, and developing an effective communications and public relations plan. The Executive Director is the public spokesperson for the Conservancy and works with local community leaders and government agencies as well as other environmental groups. The Executive Director also provides outreach to landowners and works with a team of professionals to guide landowners through the easement process.
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree, an appreciation for the outdoors, fundraising experience, exceptional communication skills including public speaking, computer literacy, and have non-profit, staff, and financial management experience.
