James City County
The Conservancy has worked in partnership with James City County to protect parcels of land when wetlands are unavoidably disturbed and the damage is offset by preserving or creating new wetland areas off site. This is called wetlands mitigation. Typically, for every one acre of wetlands disturbed, 1.8 acres are preserved or created off site. This conservation easement was utilized as a wetland mitigation area.
This property is located in the Warhill Tract and is situated adjacent to the James City County ball fields, as well as behind Lafayette High School. Wetlands were disturbed in the development of the District Sports Complex-Phase III and this easement satisfies a condition set forth by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
